Alexander Calder

Alexander Calder

Here's a cool thing that happened to me...When I got home from Alt Summit there was a package with my name on it sitting on the dining room table. When I opened it I found this happy, beautiful pop-up book called Alexander Calder: Meet the Artist with a hand written note from Princeton Architectural Press that said that it was coming out this February and they thought I might be like it. They got me. I love this guy. If you have a little artist at home, they will love learning about Calder.  He was just a big kid himself, making colorful art for art's sake.  I'm totally inspired to start working on Calder projects now. Enjoy the show!

More Than Words

More Than Words

Hi You,

I just wanted to let you know how much I love you. I do! Making things with my hands gives me so much personal satisfaction, and the fact that you spend your time following along with whatever it is I'm working on makes me feel all happy inside. I've grown as a writer over the years, because of you. I've become more confident, and more resilient, because of you. I hope that I've been able to give you something too. I hope that you have tried a recipe, or were inspired to make something for your home...whatever it is, I hope that we keep doing this forever, because we've got a good thing going on.

Have a Happy Heart Day!

Braised Chicken + Rosemary Dumplings

Braised Chicken + Rosemary Dumplings

California has been rain-starved this winter, something that has everyone feeling a little uneasy, especially the surrounding farming community up here in Sonoma County. As the skies finally opened up for what looks like a week long storm (sigh of relief) our family took to the outdoors to celebrate with a good old fashioned rain walk. Our destination was the park for some worm hunting, mud football and Olympic style rain luge down playground slides. We got very wet.  After the boys took a hot bubble bath and watched Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (now that's a crazy movie), we sat down for an early dinner of chicken and dumplings. This is a healthy, French inspired version of the dish; a perfect comfort food for a day like this. I've put together the recipe below. Here's hoping for another week of swinging in the rain...

My Happy Place

My Happy Place

From the outside, our house looks smallish, and sort of unassuming. We tromp up and down the front porch, stuff falling out of backpacks, laughing, bickering, shuffling to and from the car. This is what it's like from the outside. When you walk through the front door you find yourself in a light-filled space, dotted with big green plants, design books, and little objects, both found and made, placed willy-nilly on the built-ins and the coffee table. This is my space. It's where my most cherished possession, my grandparent's dining room table, resides and it's where I write and photograph for this blog.  Beyond that is our home...the kitchen, the family room, the spill of toys and constant chatter; a Swedish inspired happy explosion. I love both spaces, each is an expression of my style, and while they work together, they are not the same. I feel lucky to have a quiet retreat in my own home.

Fourteen Days Of Love: $100 Kidecals Giveaway

Fourteen Days Of Love: $100 Kidecals Giveaway

Don't we look cute in our glasses? If you happen have a little guy or gal in your life, then you know how they tend to misplace their things, usually right after you buy whatever it is, and "it" is usually some sort of expensive outerwear or fancy water bottle, Jasper Jennings I'm looking at you. I've taken to writing the boy's names in Sharpie across the care tag or on the bottom of a cup, which looks a little sad and eventually washes away right when it's needed most. There is a better solution, in the form of simple, tasteful decal labels from Kidecals. I met Kidecal's founder, Hilary Chandler last year while I was at Alt Summit and we've been planning some sort of collaboration ever since. I thought today would be the perfect time to introduce you to her product line, which also includes some things for you, like these woodgrain decals for your keyboard. Yes, please.
