Sunday Funday! Churro Recipe

Sunday Funday! Churro Recipe

Churros are actually a Spanish dish, but you can find versions of them all across Latin America and the Caribbean. In Mexico they usually serve churros filled with dulce de leche, but I just love dipping them in chocolate.  The churro recipe that I'm sharing is from the cookbook of the Berkeley restaurant Cesar, which calls for a decent amount of grated citrus rind, giving them a bright acidic flavor. I took a few liberties with the ingredients in order to make them dairy free, subbing comparable measurements of Earth Balance for butter, and coconut milk for cream, but I'll give you the original recipe today, though I've modified the chocolate sauce to make it easier. Skip the pancakes and serve them for breakfast on Cinco de Mayo!

Dropped Call

Dropped Call

I recently dropped my iPhone on the kitchen floor, face first, trying to keep it out of Wylie's mitts, therefore destroying the darn thing all by myself. Needless to say after a few days of cutting my cheek trying to make phone calls, it was time to get a new one.  My J.Crew case was starting to show it's age, and now I have the standard issue boring black one while I hunt for something more me. Here's a funny infographic from Tiny Prints about iPhone cases. My favorite part is the statistic on dropping your phone in the toilet. Two of my best friends have recently done this (one of them into a toilet in a particularly yucky bathroom).

Fiesta Time- Cinco De Mayo Favors

Fiesta Time- Cinco De Mayo Favors

It's really such a shame that we don't have more holidays that involve giving little kids candy don't you think? Since I have more jelly beans than I know what to do with from last month's Easter eggs I thought I'd make little party favors for Cinco de Mayo. It seems like the perfect time to try my hand at the pinata fringe technique that I so admire from crafty places like Corner Blog, though I cheated and used doube-sided tape to secure my crepe paper.  This project cost me about $5, I rescued some cardboard tubes from the recycling bin, and I put an end to the candy stash...not bad for a hours work! See picture tutorial.

Got Milk?

Got Milk?

I've never really explained why my son can't have dairy.  For a long time I've looked at it as a personal detail about him and I've intentionally kept it vague for his privacy. Some people choose to share a lot of information about their children on their blogs, and while their faces and names are very much a part of Poppy Haus, I try to keep their personalities and private information out of the conversation.  With that said, I've decided to talk about this aspect of his life today, as part of a larger discussion about feeding kids with food allergies.

Wild Man

Wild Man

Another year, another animal party!  This year instead of the farm we explored the wild side at our local wildlife museum, which happens to be just blocks from our house.  A parade of preschoolers marched, then ran through the exhibits of amazing taxidermy, pet tarantulas, and learned the difference between turtles and tortoises.  After our tour we headed back to our house for some pizza and cake, and playroom destroying mischief.  For decor I decided to go simple, using Wylie's animals as the main attraction.  I borrowed this idea for party hats from Oh Happy Day, subbing tinsel pom-poms for crepe paper, hanging some parachute style from paper lanterns over the buffet.  I also tried my hand at the cake arts this year, making a "Tortuga" in honor of Wylie's favorite show Wild Kratts. After a collective three year old meltdown at the conclusion of cake time, the kids headed home with birdseed ornaments to feed the wildlife in their own back yards. Done!
